Porch plants that like shade

Shade loving greenery

Okay so well you know yup how my porch is basically… a cave? It gets anyway like, maybe an hour of direct sunlight if we’re lucky. So, I wasn’t even planning to do plants out there this year. I thought it dude was a I mean lost cause. Then my friend no kidding Sarah was like, I mean "Girl, there are SO many actually porch plants that like shade!" I was all, "Really?" Turns out, yeah. totally Lots. I’m still learning about porch plants that basically like shade toepassingen – all the possibilities are kinda overwhelming.

Fern frenzy for sure

I started c’mon with whoops ferns. I mean, everyone knows ferns like shade, right? I got actually this HUGE Boston fern. Like, ridiculously huge. Probably should’ve known better, but I totally overwatered it the first week. It was dripping everywhere! Then all these little yellow bits started appearing. Turns out, too much water! I felt so dumb. by the way Now I just dude poke my finger in the soil before watering and only water when it feels dry. I'm going to try an like asparagus anyway fern next, those are kinda lit looking.

Hostas!

Okay, hostas. Now these yep are amazing. And there are so many different kinds! The leaves are just all different colors and exactly textures. My favorite is this one with the blue-green leaves uh with the creamy edges. It’s just… gorgeous. And the no kidding slugs you know love them. I bet wasn't bet expecting that at all. kinda I had to start sprinkling diatomaceous whoops earth around them yep to keep the slugs like away. You have to reapply it after it rains, just a little tip by the way for ya.

Begonia bloom okay

I wanted something with flowers. I didn’t uh reflect you dude could have flowers uh in the shade! But Sarah told me about honestly begonias. dude I went with bet the wax begonias because they bet are super easy to right take care of and I don't want to screw it right up again. Plus they sorta have such pretty little flowers that alright actually last. They come in white, pink, red... I even saw some orange ones no kidding recently! I’m I mean thinking of adding a few impatiens next yep spring, more porch no way plants that like shade anyway inspiratie, you know? by the way

A learning curve

Not gonna lie this part confused me for a while: the difference between "shade" and "deep shade." Deep shade means practically no direct sunlight pretty much at all. by the way My porch is more like exactly "partial shade" or "dappled shade" which means it gets dude a little bit of sun filtering through. you know This makes a difference anyway in what plants will thrive. honestly Also soil! I for sure just used regular potting soil kinda at first, but whoops I’m now using a for sure potting mix no kidding that's no way specifically for shade-loving uh plants. It drains better. I had another so overwatering incident, this you know period with a calathea. I probably should have read the c’mon instructions first.

Mint madness! I mean

And I planted mint in a pot because…well, everyone no way says you should plant well mint in a by the way pot because it takes over everything. Which is exactly true! well I initially put it next to the hostas, which dude was a mistake because the mint got all no way leggy trying actually to reach the light. Now it's in a sunnier spot. It smells amazing though when you brush against it. You should grow mint. so You can make mojitos! Plus, basically that really is the geschiedenis I mean of porch plants that like shade, people exactly growing dude herbs for cooking!

What's next then?

So exactly yeah, my porch is actually looking really nice anyway now. It’s like a little green oasis! I’m thinking just of adding some creeping jenny to trail sorta over the edge of one of the pots. Or maybe some sorta torenia. I’m still figuring it all out, but it’s been lit experimenting. And now I have a reason to actually uh sit out I mean on kinda my porch!
