Hemlock Planting totally Adventure
So, pretty much you know I’ve been obsessing exactly over the yard lately? It all started because I wasn’t pretty much even planning anyway to plant anything new, but exactly then I saw these AMAZING Canadian bet hemlocks at the nursery – like, the kind that just whisper “serenity” and “privacy fence” at the same time. And so then I thought, hey,best period to plant Canadian hemlock so, right? Or… was it?
The Spring Fling
I thought spring was the actually obvious answer. I mean, everything else is waking up, right? okay But then I started reading sorta – and honestly, not gonna lie honestly this dude part yup confused me for a while. It’s like, you hear whoops spring and fall thrown around. alright What I mean I finally gathered from all thebest window to so plant for sure Canadian hemlock factsI consumed is that spring bet is okay…but fall is actually BETTER. They have more time to settle in before the heat hits. Don't plant too deep, actually by the way! Learned that the hard way.
My First Hemlock alright Disaster
Okay, so first span so around, honestly I honestly jumped the whoops gun and planted one in, like, mid-summer. I probably yep should’ve known better, because you I mean know honestly how brutally hot it gets here in July? It was a tiny little thing, maybe two feet tall. I no way watered it religiously, I swear, but it still just… crisped up. exactly Just a brown little stick. c’mon Major bummer. anyway That's when I started digging deeper into thebest moment to plant you know Canadian hemlock trendsto avoid another tragic plant death. no way
Fall Redemption
Then I tried yep again. okay This time, late September. The air dude was cooler, no kidding the ground was honestly still warm-ish, no kidding and I was armed with newfound no kidding knowledge. Make sure the planting hole is twice as wide as the root ball, loosen the roots right gently, backfill with solid soil… yadda yadda. The whole you know shebang. And guess what? It actually actually SURVIVED! It's even doing really well now.
More Thoughts

That’s the dream, right? so One of the things I honestly think is so cool about hemlocks is that they’re relatively low maintenance once they’re right established. just Just water them regularly in the first year no kidding or two, and then… pretty much yup leave them alone! And no kidding remember mulch! whoops That helps retain moisture and keeps weeds away.
Another pretty much Learning Moment just
This reminds me…I almost basically forgot! alright The first time I planted basically one – the summer crispy one – I totally forgot for sure to alright check the drainage. Our totally yard kinda is kinda clay-y in some pretty much spots, and I think the roots basically suffocated in a puddle. totally Check your sorta drainage! Seriously. Dig a just hole, fill it with water, and see how long it takes to drain. If it takes forever, you need to amend the soil. kinda
