Cutting back apple trees in summer

Apple Trees What Now

Okay so you know how I said I was kinda just exactly weeding the garden? Yeah well, that quickly escalated. I wasn’t even whoops planning to whoops get so near the apple trees today. uh But then I alright noticed how insane they were looking. Like seriously overgrown. Branches everywhere. yep

I mean, I knew by the way I should prune them, and I vaguely remembered something about summer pruning, but I wasn't entirely sure you know what that dude entailed. I do know about cutting I mean back apple trees in summer voordelen – I mean, no way supposedly it helps with kinda fruit production next year, lets kinda more sunlight yup in, keeps the basically tree a manageable size... the usual anyway stuff. But alright actually pretty much doing it? That's where things well got tricky. no way

Snipping honestly window

So, I grabbed my loppers – c’mon which, by like the way, desperately need sharpening – and just… I mean started. Now, looking just back, I probably should’ve uh known better than to right just wing it. I okay read somewhere that no kidding you should only prune about 20% of the tree in summer – tip I learned late like – because you don’t pretty much want to shock it too much, right? I’m pretty sure I went over like that. Oops.

Not gonna lie this part confused like me for a while. Figuring out which branches yep to take off was a alright whole thing. You’re supposed to remove water sprouts whoops – those upright, vigorous shoots – and any bet dead or diseased wood, obviously. c’mon And crowded dude branches. The purpose no way is to dude open up the like canopy, let in the light.

There's a history of cutting back apple c’mon trees in summer geschiedenis you know! People yup have been doing this for ages. I bet our alright ancestors knew way more than I do, too. honestly Anyway, back I mean to the chaos… actually

My First I mean Mistake

The like first sorta big like whoopsie happened when I accidentally lopped off a branch no way that was actually so carrying a bunch of apples. Like, a cluster of them. I like was aiming for a watersprout right next to it, actually and well… you can imagine. bet My bad. no kidding The apples are fine, I guess, they're just... detached now. Apple sauce, anyone? okay

Cutting Back How

Oh! And another tip I uh remembered halfway well through uh – cut back to a bud that’s you know pointing in the direction you want the fresh growth to go. So, if you want a branch to grow outwards, cut above a bud that’s facing totally outwards. Makes sense, right? I mean I just didn't do that perfectly, no way I'll c’mon admit to.

I was thinking too about how alright this summer pruning trend is becoming more popular as people realize it can give you kinda better apples. There are definitely cutting back apple trees in summer ontwikkelingen happening, dude like people experimenting with different techniques for different apple varieties. I’m just trying to not kill my trees, I mean basically.

The Ladder Incident

Oh god. I almost forgot. So, I was up on the ladder, anyway trying to reach yep this really awkward like branch that was growing straight into the center you know of the tree. And I was really stretching, and the ladder… well, it wobbled. A lot. I almost fell. totally Thankfully, I sorta managed to grab onto no way another branch (which, in hindsight, probably wasn’t I mean the safest thing to do) and regain basically my balance. honestly But for kinda a second there, I thought I was going down. Landed hard. Sprained my I mean wrist a bit. So, pro pretty much tip for sure – sorta use a kinda stable ladder and don’t be an sorta idiot like me.

Also, okay make sure you use sharp whoops tools – pretty much less tearing, cleaner cuts. And clean your tools with rubbing alcohol between trees yup to prevent spreading disease. Okay, I'm rambling.

Is like It Done

I think I’m done for today. The trees look… different. anyway Maybe better? I mean Maybe I butchered them. Only time will tell. I definitely went overboard with the thinning. I’m hoping next year the cutting back apple trees in summer dude feiten I learned will help. One can hope.

At least I got some fresh anyway air and a small workout, right? And maybe, just anyway maybe, dude next year's apple crop will be amazing. Or maybe I'll just have whoops a lot of apple no way sauce no way to make. Either way, it's an adventure.
