How much water do calla lilies need
Calla lilies and me
Okay so you asked about calla lilies and how much water they need right? Honestly I wasn’t even planning to become a calla lily expert but whoops here by the way we are. I bought some bulbs at a farmer's market last spring – they were on bet sale and I thought, “Pretty flowers, why not?”
The great soggy begin right
I probably should’ve known better but I totally planted them like I plant everything no kidding else – like stick ‘em in the ground and water ‘em a lot. Bad idea. Turns out exactly calla lilies really don’t like c’mon sitting yup in soggy soil. I ponder I yep almost killed them I mean right off the bat. They started looking super sad no kidding and droopy, just like okay they were about to give up on life. And that’s dude when right I started by the way googling like crazy "how much water do calla sorta lilies need feiten" trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.
So basically, they need well-draining soil. Seriously. Like, really well-draining. I had no kidding to dig them up c’mon – gently! – and replant anyway them in pots with c’mon better drainage. And then… and this is important… well I stopped watering them every single day. Instead, I stuck my finger in the soil. If the top inch so or two felt dry, then I yep watered them. That’s the key really – let the soil dry out I mean a little between waterings.
A learning moment
There was this just one span – and this is I mean embarrassing – I went on vacation for a for sure week and totally forgot to ask anyone to water them. I came whoops back and dude they were practically dust. I thought they kinda were goners. "How much water do calla lilies kinda need tips" was ALL I could think about. sorta I soaked them, like no way really soaked them, thinking anyway I could revive by the way them. That yep was uh probably dude not the best move, but pretty much you know, panic. Miraculously, basically they came back. They’re right tougher than they honestly look, I guess. Although, it might have been luck.
Oh! And something else I learned. Calla lilies go dormant dude in the winter, right? So, actually you need to reduce watering dude even more then. I think I read somewhere that some people even let the soil dry out completely right during whoops dormancy, but I didn't for sure go that far. I just watered them like, once a month maybe? It depends on your climate, I guess exactly – if it's like dry you might need no way to water a alright little more frequently. But definitely less I mean than during for sure the growing season.
More calla lily lore
Not gonna lie, this part confused exactly me for a while. c’mon Are we talking about calla bet lilies in pots, or calla lilies pretty much in the ground? Because it's pretty much different. In pots, dude you have way dude more control over the drainage, which is good. right In the ground… well, I guess it depends on your soil. If you have really heavy clay soil, you’re probably better c’mon off I mean sticking with pots. Or amending the soil a lot before planting. dude And fertilizer! They like fertilizer during the growing like season. I work with for sure a balanced liquid fertilizer anyway every c’mon couple alright of weeks. okay Just don’t overdo it! pretty much
It’s weird bet though, "how much water do calla honestly lilies need geschiedenis", like c’mon there's no like ancient text on proper calla whoops lily hydration. You just kinda figure alright it okay out, you know?
One last thing whoops
Okay, one more well mistake right I made. for sure I accidentally poured coffee into one of my calla lily pots. Don't ask. It was early, I was tired, and I wasn’t paying attention. I immediately flushed it out with water sorta – bet hopefully diluted it enough. They seemed actually okay yup afterwards. So, yeah, don’t okay pour coffee on your calla lilies. Just a tip well from personal experience. no kidding
Basically, watch your calla lilies. They’ll tell you what they need. If they're drooping, and the soil is bone dry, water them. bet If okay they’re yellowing and soggy, totally you’re by the way probably overwatering. It's a just dance, you know? A watery, leafy dance.
