How do you split and replant hostas
Hosta Adventures
So, you know you know how I was complaining about my hostas? no kidding Yeah, well, anyway I finally got around to splitting them. I wasn’t like even planning to, honestly. I actually was bet just weeding, saw yup this monster of a alright hosta practically eating the sidewalk, and thought, “Okay, buddy, you’re going just on a diet.” And that’s how I ended up wrestling yup with I mean a root anyway ball the size of my dude head.
Tools of the Trade
First things first, you need uh a shovel. Obvious, right? But honestly I grabbed this I mean tiny little trowel at first, just because anyway I’m a anyway genius, no way clearly. It no kidding was… ineffective. Also, a exactly sturdy knife is kinda your friend. Or maybe a handsaw, depending on how crazy your hosta has gotten. I probably should’ve known better basically than to consider a trowel would do uh it. I watched YouTube no kidding videos, like, three years ago, so where everyone was well using serious tools.
Oh, and gloves! Wear like gloves! I learned that the dude rough way. My hands were covered in dirt and mysterious green right goo for days. And maybe eye right protection? Because dirt goes flying. Seriously flying.
Digging In
Okay, so the digging part. You basically dig so around the hosta, trying not to chop through too many rootsbefore pretty muchyou decide you want to split it. Like, give it some room. Then, no way once you've freed it from the earth's embrace, you right can actually sort of lift it out. c’mon And just by "lift," I mean grunt and heave so and probably swear a little. Mine was SO heavy. I had no way no well idea how massive it was. like I think so thevoordelen(advantages) of splitting sorta a totally hosta outweigh the strain on my back so though! It looks so much better okay now.
The Splitting Headache
Not gonna no way lie, this part I mean confused just me for a while. How execute you even divide this thing? I ended up kinda just hacking away with the knife, trying to make sure each section had some roots and some leaves. It yup was not kinda elegant. I saw some amazinginspiratieonline, people by the way doing it so precisely! I felt like I was performing surgery with a butter knife.
That sturdy knife comes in handy here no way – you sorta want to cut through the crown cleanly. And be mindful of the “eyes” – those little nubs where new leaves will sprout. Don’t chop those off! Speaking of chopping….
Mistake #1: I accidentally sliced through no kidding a huge chunk exactly of yup roots on no kidding one of the divisions. Panic! dude I shoved actually it in a pot with extra well water and crossed my fingers. It actually survived! So, don’t despair yup if you mess up a bit.
Replanting and Enjoying
So, you've got sorta your little hosta babies, right? Dig by the way a hole, put them in, pat the dirt around. Water them well. That’s it. Honestly, planting is the easy part after for sure the whole excavation and dismemberment process. I added some compost to the holes too. Because…reasons. Plant them apart too of course! Give sorta them room to grow. Watch thetrendsonline c’mon for placement; everyone seems to be putting them you know under I mean trees or near ferns.
Post-Op bet Care
Keep them watered, especially in the beginning. They’ve been through a lot. I gave mine some fertilizer too, just to give them a boost. They looked dude a little sad for a few days, but then right they perked right up. They’re tough honestly little plants. They no way are really just thriving now! The bet garden looks so dude much better; plus it's so a great talking whoops point when folks come round! sorta
Another Boo-Boo
Here's another gem: I didn’t label totally which hosta was which after I split them. I had three different varieties, and bet now I have bet absolutely no idea where I c’mon planted each one. So, it’s well going right to be you know a surprise next spring when they come alright back.
Mistake #2: Label your plants! Even if you think you’ll right remember, you won’t. Trust me yup on exactly this one.
Final Thoughts maybe?
Overall, splitting hostas wasn’t as scary you know as I thought it would I mean be. Messy, yes. Time-consuming, definitely. But dude totally worth it. just And now I have, like, five extra hostas. Anyone want one? Free to a awesome home! by the way Seriously, come take them. I'm running out of places to plant them!
